Location: California Channel Islands
Scientific name: Squatina californica
Key Words:
Description: Angel sharks are named for their broad angel-like pectoral fins that make them look more like a skate or ray than a shark. They lay on the bottom and wait for fish to swim past and then they lurch forward with their mouth wide open to catch prey. They were heavily overfished off California during the late 1980's and early 1990's. I've started to see more of these sharks lately.
